Progress in Screenings and Suppression: How We’re Tracking Toward Ending HIV

Jun 30, 2025 | 101, News

At The Project, our ultimate goal is clear: achieve viral suppression for every person we serve and eliminate new HIV transmissions. Every program we run—every screening, every risk assessment, every health conversation—feeds into that mission.
Here’s a quick look at how we’re doing.

Viral Suppression: Strong and Steady

Month after month, we’re holding steady at over 90% viral suppression among our Ryan White Part C clients.

  • This means that the vast majority of our clients on treatment have undetectable viral loads—and cannot transmit HIV to others.

Why Screenings Matter

Screenings aren’t just checkboxes. They’re key touchpoints for keeping clients in care, catching health concerns early, and building trust.
Here’s how we’ve done from May to September 2024:

Screening Type

Recent Progress Highlights

Cervical Cancer Dropped in July but rebounded to 71%+ in August and September
Colon Cancer Dipped to 48% in June, now back up to 54%
Breast Cancer Steady around 54-58%
Anal Pap Started tracking in July, now at 46%
Hepatitis A Vaccines Gradual rise from 86% to 90%

Focus Area: Medication Adherence

While suppression remains high, medication adherence rates are lower than we’d like—just 18% in September.

  • This shows us where we need to focus next: helping clients stay on treatment consistently, not just occasionally.

Sexual Risk Assessments

These brief but powerful conversations can change lives.

  • We’ve seen an encouraging bump—from 11% in July to 21% in August—though it dipped again in September.
  • We’re working to make these conversations a routine part of every visit.

How This Connects to Our Mission

Every service—whether it’s a Pap test, a Hep A shot, or a risk assessment—is part of a larger strategy:

  • Support the whole person.
  • Keep people in care.
  • Suppress the virus.
  • Prevent transmission.
